Google Books/eBooks

It has been rumored for quite a while that Google will launch its own ebook store. After many rumor days has been passed and many promises and claims of this is the legitimate news has been failed, everyone believed Google would launch one by end of the year. Today Google books officially launched. It is formerly known as Google Editions, Google entered into already crowded and chaotic market.

What sets Google Books apart from any other ebook outlets? Google eBooks is pretty open as Google always want their service to be, though it seems its just computer, android, apple, sony, and nook for now but surely supports more devices than any other outlet right now and books stored in cloud system with unlimited storage of your purchases with sync between all your devices. Currently offers more than 15 million books and about 3 million titles on sale.

I do not know much about publishing industry but I wonder how this will work out against competitors. As an android phone user and an iPad owner I tried Kindle and iBooks and my current ebook system is kindle. It does everything what Google is doing right now except reading directly from cloud (Kindle also stores all purchased book on there server so you don’t have to store all of them on your disks) and supporting ePub and PDF file formats. Google’s solution seems better way to do in the near future but I’m still skeptical about all cloud with current US infrastructure of mobile broadband and lately how major Internet Servie Providers having problem with their services.

I often open up a book and read when there’s no internet access. I personally not sure how often I will be willing to read books when I’m not able to read in my CTA train when there’s no internet connectivities.

However, I definitely welcome the direction of Google is going. Everyone, let’s welcome Google to eBook market.

a quick thought of new MacBook Air price

I read many benchmarks and it looks like SSD makes huge differences in performance comparing to 13-inch MacBook Pro. Typically 256GB SSD are somewhere around $600 range. 320GB 5400rpm HDD are around $60~100. Considering two storage mediums’ price differences, 13-inch MacBook Air doesn’t seem too expensive. No matter what I’d get 15-inch MacBook Pro any given day though.

T-Mobile G2, a quick review after a day of use

Things I like
1. Keyboard. Did I say keyboard?
I’m still trying my fingers to get familiar with physical keys. Almost two years of wondering on virtual keyboard made it little bit uncomfortable but I love actually having the physical keyboard.
2. Call quality
Compare to my dear NexusOne, call quality is little better.
3. Hinge design
I remember how unsatisfied I was with G1′s design or Xperia x1a with it’s slide out. I didn’t like how G1 continuously hitting the side and became loose or not so smooth sliding out mechanism of Xperia x1a’s design. Fortunately my hinge didn’t have any problem and works great.
4. Size
So much thinner than I thought. Of course comparing to ones without physical keyboards this is much thicker but wow not bad at all.
Now the things I don’t like
1. G2 didn’t restore all my apps from app store. I had to manually search and download them all again. Yes it still had my paid apps on there but none of them restored either.
2. Screen problems.
First, automatic brightness doesn’t work. On top of that screen with white background flickers (i.e. surfing the web) when the brightness set to minimum.
3. Space bar on the keyboard
I really do wish space bar is little bit bigger. I do not need three quick keys. Two would been perfectly fine. I rather have a bit longer space bar.
4. Battery life
Probably due to auto-brightness not working properly, battery drained a lot quicker than i thought. It lasted me only 7 hrs on my first day.
Sigh… After work I’m going to T-Mobile store to exchange it =(

What is the right price for music?

Source: Digital Music News

What is the right price for music? It is a great question to ask everyone who are in the recording industry and consumers who listens to them. It is sad to see when everything else is getting more expensive as time goes, music gets cheaper and cheaper. It is even to a point cheaper than a cup of coffee.

Amazon.com often offers a special daily deals of an album right below $3 for digital downloads, Best Buy and many other retailers sell new release CD right below $10, and I think new LP with free digital download of the album is around $20. In a letter from Sufjan Stevens from Asthmatic Kitty Records (follow the source link) wrote

we personally feel that physical products like EPs should sell for around $7 and full-length CDs for around $10-12 We think digital EPs should sell for around $5 and full-length digital albums for something like $8.

It sounds about right with the pricing, but i personally think whether it is digital or a physical CD the price should be same at $7 for EP, $10 for a CD, and $12 for a special edition. In order to push this price plans, individual song sale price needs to be raised too. $2.99 for feature songs and $1.99 for any other songs. It may sound too expensive, but in reality there are millions of purchase a day in app stores and they don’t complain much about price they pay. Eventually record labels need to turn into marketing companies as technology develops and easy of release albums through many different formats. They dont’ need this giant distributors but they still need a company to market them. When consumers know purchasing an album doesn’t really help artists they loves to listen to, $2.99 a song will sound too much but let’s say 30% go to iTuens/Amazon, 30% record label, and 40% to the artist should be enough to encourage fans to purchase albums and songs.

Yeah, instead of a giant advances paying money for recording and all, but spend a lot of money in marketing only. Since artist’s portion of royalty at 40% is great enough to recoup the costs of marketing easily and after all fans will purchase music they like, record labels make money without too much of risks, and artists don’t have to only look for a giant advanced but enjoy writing new songs and engaging with fans.

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D

It is sad that this is the first movie to watch since Inception. Anyway, it was another great experience watching at the Muvico and enjoy watching a movie there.

Back to the topic, Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D was very entertaining. Of course I didn’t expect much. I simply wanted to watch some action movie and this movie fulfilled my desire. I wonder if non-3D would make much differences but I loved it anyway.

Honestly I do not have much to say about this movie. If you want a good entertainment, then go watch it. If you want a great movie, then don’t expect much at all. I enjoyed it, I liked it, and I’ll recommend it

My score: 4/5
